If someone sets out on a journey - Rishesh 2017

"If someone sets out on a journey, he has a lot to tell" is a german proverb. And if 19 do a trip, then they can experience a lot more together and have even more to tell. These thoughts came to my mind when I thought about this year's Jyotish study trip to Rishikesh in October. I have many pleasant memories, like our morning walks on the banks of the Ganges, without the hustle and bustle and the traffic noise. Meditative and contemplative were ours stops near various statues or the Shiva lingam, the Ganges flowing in the background.

Also our excursion to the Kunjapuri Temple, which is located at over 1600 m altitude and from where we had  a view over the Ganga valley and to the distant Himalayan mountains, belonged to these precious moments.

Obviously, the astrological seminars were at the center of our attention, and the high expectations we had of our two Jyotish teachers, Ms Gayatri Devi Vasudev and Prof. Jaya Sekhar, were surpassed. Ms Gayatri Devi Vasudev, daughter of the famous Dr. B V Raman, taught the Prashna rules in a way that encouraged students to start using this certainly very complex subject with the confidence to be well-equipped, having studied under the guidance of a true authority in the field. One of the strengths of Ms. Vasudev is certainly the well-structured and comprehensible way in which she presents the material. But anyone who suspects that this is a rather dry matter, is mistaken: With the help of mythological stories, practical examples and everyday Indian events Misses Vasudev spiced her lessons very skilfully and appropriately. Her friendly and patient nature certainly contributed to make the lessons interesting, varied and above all instructive.

Without this being planned, the more than 5-day seminar developed its own dynamics towards the theme of the ever-interesting partnership. "Will I marry X or not?", was often the question in the Prashna examples in Ms. Vasudev's class. Prof. Sekhar then built on this in his lessons and gave very clear guidelines on the timing of the marriage. Soon we had our fun in the breaks with respect to Mr. or Mrs. X, whom seemingly all wanted to marry and to the "yes but with delay" forecast, which was quite a common outcome in Prof. Sekhar´s examples. So even a particularly ambitious participant used the newly learned knowledge on the train ride from Rishikesh to Delhi and told a young Indian lady, that the marriage was going to happen, but – what a surprise - with delay.

In terms of content, both teachers managed to gain the students´ full attention, as they were teaching rules and knowledge that cannot be found in any textbook and that could only be delivered by experienced Jyotishis. Thus, Ms. Vasudev introduced us to the yogas or aspects of Prashna astrology in a way that was largely unknown to us, but sounded very conclusive. In short, she said that in an Ithasala Yoga the two planets involved need to be in a certain order not only in terms of degrees, but also in terms of the signs. Thus, an Ithasala between Jupiter in Libra and the Moon in Sagittarius cannot be formed, even if the required orb is there. However, if the moon were in Leo, he could form an Ithasala Yoga with Jupiter in Libra, because then the faster planet is behind the slower one. Prof. Sekhar explained,  amoungst other things, the background  of different kutas (criteria of partnership compatibility) that allowes a deep understanding of the subtle connections. A new view on the ancient system was a result of these enlightening classes.

In addition, we also spent an evening with a very interesting lecture from the field of Vedanta, which Mr. Vasudev convincingly presented. Through his explanations and stories, he inspired the attendees to contemplate on some important personal and social points. Also Prof. Sekhar's mythological stories, to which we devoted to a full morning, reached us and cast a spell over us. The Indian culture, mythology and spirituality really has a lot to offer. So I believe that all, who set out on this trip, were excited and happy and I hope that the resulting interpersonal relationships will last for a long time.
